STOP KILLING US.

It is an open letter to colleagues in Western theatres and cultural institutions urging them to take a stand against the genocide of the Palestinians and the Israeli government's ongoing attacks on innocent civilians in the Arab world. The unprecedented urgency of the massacre of our peoples calls for a coordinated response and international solidarity.

It is a (factual) post-script to our current touring production “MUTE”.

STOP KILLING US

To our friends and colleagues in theatres and cultural institutions in the West, 

Since the events of 9-11 our theatre company and many others from across the Arab region have worked closely with you, with your teams and institutions to present important, often highly political, theatre to audiences in your cities. During this time, we made strong friendships and believed our work together was able to make a positive contribution to the common good by working against the dehumanisation of Arab peoples and towards a greater understanding between our cultures. 

Today, members of our theatre company, alongside hundreds of thousands of other innocent Arab civilians are being bombed, killed and starved to death by the genocidal machine that Israel unleashes with impunity every single day. Your silence normalises this: your silence is killing us.

In September of this year Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, outlined to the United Nations General Assembly his vision for "The New Middle East". Underlying this sanitised vision of free trade is a colonial agenda that relies on the criminal appropriation of land and exacts blood, vengeance, wreckage and death at every step.

Anyone who objects to this agenda is gagged with specious accusations of antisemitism. Anyone who speaks out is a threat to the new public order. Anyone who stands in the way is killed.

In Europe today, many of you are rightly worried about the rise of the extreme right.  In the US, many of you justifiably fear the dismantling of your own Constitution, over the course of a second Trump Presidency. What Israel is doing to the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples is the prelude to an age of tyranny that will not remain confined to the Arab world. 

The behaviour of Israel aims to normalise mass murder, the mutilation and starvation of entire civilian populations, whilst simultaneously silencing and criminalising all opposition. This is a danger not only to the people of this region: it is a danger to your own cultural institutions, your freedom of speech and your democracies. It is a threat to your own humanity.

We urge you to speak out and join your voices to the appeals of the Director General of the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, UNWRA, Amnesty International and many other independent global organisations. We urge you to mobilise the platforms of your institutions to call upon your political representatives demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon and to bring the perpetrators of the crimes against humanity to justice.

'Nothing comes of nothing', says Shakespeare's Lear. Today, silence breeds silence and in the absence of sound, the legions of tyranny gain ground against us and against you. 

Silence kills: stop killing us.

À nos amis et collègues des théâtres et des institutions culturelles de l'Occident. 

Chers amis et collègues des théâtres occidentaux, depuis les événements du 11 septembre, notre compagnie de théâtre et de nombreuses autres de la région arabe ont travaillé en étroite collaboration avec vous, vos équipes et vos institutions pour présenter un théâtre politique important au public de vos villes. 

Pendant cette période, nous avons noué de solides amitiés et nous avons cru que notre travail commun pouvait apporter une contribution positive au bien commun en s'opposant à la déshumanisation des peuples Arabes et vers une plus grande compréhension entre nos cultures. 

Aujourd'hui, des membres de notre compagnie théâtrale, ainsi que des centaines de milliers d'autres civils arabes innocents, sont bombardés, tués et affamés par la machine génocidaire qu'Israël déclenche en toute impunité, jour après jour. Votre silence normalise cette situation : votre silence nous tue.

En septembre 2024 le Premier ministre israélien, Benjamin Netanyahu, a présenté à l'Assemblée Générale des Nations unies sa vision du « Nouveau Moyen-Orient ». Cette vision aseptisée du libre-échange est sous-tendue par un programme colonial qui repose sur l'appropriation criminelle de terres, tout en imposant le sang, la vengeance, les dégâts et la mort à chaque pas. 

Quiconque s'oppose à cet agenda est bâillonné par des accusations spécieuses d'antisémitisme.  Quiconque s'exprime est une menace pour le nouvel ordre public. Quiconque fait obstacle est tué.

Aujourd'hui, en Europe, beaucoup d'entre vous s'inquiètent à juste titre de la montée de l'extrême droite.  Aux États-Unis, beaucoup d'entre vous craignent à juste titre le démantèlement de leur propre Constitution, au cours d'une deuxième présidence de Donald Trump. Ce que l'Israël fait subir aux peuples palestinien et libanais n'est que le prélude à une ère de tyrannie qui ne restera pas confinée au monde arabe. 

Le comportement d'Israël vise à normaliser les meurtres de masse, la mutilation et la famine de populations civiles entières, tout en réduisant au silence -en criminalisant- toute opposition. Ce n'est pas seulement un danger pour les peuples de cette région : c'est un danger pour vos propres démocraties, vos institutions culturelles et votre liberté d'expression - c'est une menace pour votre propre humanité.

Nous vous exhortons à vous exprimer et à joindre vos voix aux appels du directeur général des Nations Unies, de la Cour pénale internationale, de l'UNWRA, d'Amnesty International et de nombreuses autres organisations mondiales indépendantes. Nous vous exhortons à mobiliser les plateformes de vos institutions pour exiger de vos représentants politique un cessez-le-feu immédiat à Gaza, en Cisjordanie et au Liban et pour traduire en justice les auteurs de crimes contre l'humanité.

» De rien rien ne peut venir », dit le Roi Lear de Shakespeare. Aujourd'hui, le silence engendre le silence - et en l'absence de son, les légions de la tyrannie gagnent du terrain sur nous, et sur vous. 

Le silence tue: ne nous tuez pas.

إلى أصدقائنا وزملائنا في المسارح والمؤسسات الثقافية في الغرب،

منذ أحداث 11 سبتمبر، عملت فرقتنا المسرحية، إلى جانب العديد من الفرق المسرحية من العالم العربي، بشكلٍ وثيقٍ معكم. قدمنا أعمالاً مسرحية سياسية مهمة لجماهيركم في مدنكم، وبنينا خلال هذه الشراكة صداقات متينة. كنا نؤمن أن عملنا المشترك يمكن أن يسهم في مواجهة خطاب الكراهية الذي تتعرض له شعوبنا و يثري التفاهم بين ثقافتنا.

اليوم، أعضاء من فرقتنا، إلى جانب مئات الآلاف من المدنيين الأبرياء في العالم العربي يتم قصفهم وقتلهم وتجويعهم بواسطة آلة الإبادة الجماعية التي تطلقها إسرائيل بلا عقاب يوماً بعد يوم، وصمتكم يجعل هذا الوضع "طبيعياً": صمتكم يقتلنا.

في شهر سبتمبر من هذا العام، قدم رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي، بنيامين نتنياهو، أمام الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة رؤيته لما أسماه "الشرق الأوسط الجديد". خلف هذه الصورة المزيفة للتجارة الحرة تكمن أجندة استعمارية تسعى للاستيلاء على الأرض بالقوة، بينما تغرق كل من يقف في طريقها في بحرٍ من الدماء والانتقام والدمار والموت. 

أي صوتٍ يعترض يتعرض للإسكات باتهامات باطلة بمعاداة السامية، وأي كلمة حرة تعتبر تهديداً للنظام العام الجديد. 

في أوروبا اليوم، أنتم محقون في القلق بشأن صعود اليمين المتطرف، وفي الولايات المتحدة، هناك خوف مشروع من انهيار دستوركم في حال فوز ترامب بفترة رئاسية ثانية. لكن ما تفعله إسرائيل بشعبي فلسطين ولبنان ما هو إلا مقدمة لعصر من الطغيان لن يبقى محصوراً في العالم العربي.

إسرائيل تعمل على تطبيع القتل الجماعي، وتشويه وتجويع شعوب بأكملها، بينما تُجرِّم كل من يعارض أو يرفع صوته. هذا الخطر لا يقتصر على شعوب هذه المنطقة فقط، بل هو تهديد حقيقي لديمقراطيتكم، مؤسساتكم الثقافية، وحرية التعبير لديكم. إنه تهديد لإنسانيتكم ذاتها.

نناشدكم أن ترفعوا أصواتكم وتنضموا إلى مناشدات الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة والمحكمة الجنائية الدولية والأونروا ومنظمة العفو الدولية والعديد من المنظمات الدولية المستقلة الأخرى. نطلب منكم أن تحشدوا منصات مؤسساتكم للضغط على حكوماتكم للمطالبة بوقف فوري لإطلاق النار في غزة والضفة الغربية ولبنان، ومحاسبة مرتكبي الجرائم ضد الإنسانية.

"لا شيء يأتي من لا شيء"، هكذا قال شكسبير في مسرحيته "الملك لير". واليوم، يولِّد الصمت مزيداً من الصمت، وفي غياب الصوت، تتقدم جحافل الطغيان- ضدنا وضدكم.
